The Dallas Cowboys are on the Clock

The Cowboys have the 9th pick in this year’s draft. Their biggest needs are safety and offensive line. Unfortunately, there are no safeties or offensive linemen rated that high and you don’t really want to reach for a guy with the 9th pick. So the Cowboys decision this year is tough. It could be simplified if a few guys fall to them. That would include DT Marcell Dareus, CB Patrick Peterson or probably even DT/DE Nick Fairley. Depending on his health, DT/DE Da'Quan Bowers probably joins this list. If OLB Von Miller falls he would be interesting, but it’s not a lock to take him. We already have two good outside line backers and as frustrated as I was with Spencer last year; I am far from done with him. Worse, Miller may simply be too small for a 3/4 defense. Sure he can pass rush, but what if they run at him? WR A.J. Green makes no sense at all, even if he falls to 9. Even if we cut Roy Williams there’s just no room for him and won’t be so long as Miles and Dez are around. As t...

Adios Patrick Crayton

Thanks for all you did for Dallas over the years!  It's sad to see you go.  All the best with your next adventure; except when you play Dallas.

Top 10 Cowboys Plays of the Decade

Recently saw this top ten list put together on the Cowboys website ( link ).

The Bengals are going to win one game this year

Hope it’s not against us. Dallas has no business loosing today against Cincinnati.

Green Bay Tonight!

The cowboys play Green Bay tonight. So far this year, the Packers look like and NFC leader, so this could be one of the toughest games for the Cowboys all year. The Packers have weapons all over the field, so instead of attempting to take away one point of their game, the Cowboys defense needs to be disruptive. On offense, I think we can run the ball on them. It was a fun win over the Eagles last week, though we won’t beat too many teams that score 37 points.

Nice win over Browns - Eagles next!

It’s a little scary to say, but in the Cowboys’ season opener win against the Browns, they actually looked better than last year. The addition of Felix Jones, Zack Thomas and Packman Jones made its impact. The Browns are an up and coming team, but the Cowboys almost made it look easy. Romo was the key to the win, but certainly all the other weapons (Owens, Barber, Whitten…) played well. The offensive line looked great. Of course, there were a few areas to work on: penalties, Romo threw a pick, and lack of pass rush. But overall the Cowboys looked good. Next up is the Eagles. They will be tough; the division rivals are dogfights. McNabb spreads the ball around, so the secondary and pass rush has to be good. They need to shadow Westbrook every play and get pressure on McNabb. If they do, they should win.

What's going on with the Cowboys?

It's the offseason, but there's still a lot brewing... We have the draft coming up, free agency, and the possibility of picking up Packman Jones. Free Agency In free agency we protected our tackle Flozel Adams and put a franchise tag on safety Ken Hamlin, but that used up most of the salary cap. We lost 3 non-starting defensive backs, Keith Davis a safety, Reeves and Jones two backup cornerbacks. We traded Jason Fergason for a late round pick - he was injured last year and we have too many Defensive Tackles now that we picked up Tank. The big loss this year was Julius Jones our starting running back. I'll miss Julius, I never thought he quite got a fair shake, although I have to admit he didn't live up to his potential over the past two years. So long Julius!!! Interestingly, we picked up Zach Thomas from Miami. Zach's an experienced inside linebacker and tough run stopper. Unless we are going to keep 8 linebackers on the team this year, I think this is bad news for...

Chat with Dr. Galyon about Packer's comments on Arminians

For anyone interested, I have been chatting with Dr. James Galyon about J. I. Packers' introduction to Owen's Death of Death in the Death of Christ over on his fine blog here . BTW, among James' many qualities, he's a Cowboys fan. :-)

Cowboys end the year 13-3

The only one's that beat us were the Patriots, Eagles and Skins. No true blue fan is happy to loose to the Eagles and Skins, but all in all it's been a great regular season. The highlights of the year for me have been Romo's performance, Owen's attitude, Witten & Barber's progress from good to great this year and the pass rush of Ware, Ellis and Rattliff . As for a single favorite play, that's a tough one, but give Nick Folk's kick to bet the Bills a slight edge over Romo to Witten to bet the Lions. The downside has been the way we finished out the year. We always seem to have trouble in December. But we should get key guys back in time for the playoffs. Having Newman at Cornerback is key, and Watkins (although not a starter or hard hitter) is one of our best cover safties . We also need our center, Gurode (not that Proctor's done that bad). But the big plus will be in the wide receiver area. If we can get both Owens and Glenn in the g...

Owens vs. Owen

Terrell Owens . . . . Vs. John Owen . . . . Round 1: Providence Terrell Owens starts out strong with his views of God’s providence. God may not be there when you want him but he is always on time. -Terrell Owens This is God's world this is not the media's world. -Terell Owens John Owen counters with his view of God’s providence The providence of God protecting and governing all, but watching in an especial manner for the good of them that are his - John Owen Round 2: Morals Owens comes back with his take on morality: Right is right and wrong is wrong. - Terrell Owens But Owen counters: The custom of sinning takes away the sense of it, the course of the world takes away the shame of it - John Owen Round 3: Top performers Owens recently made the top 5 list of all time touchdown receptions. Owen bounces back as he reciently was ranked in the top 5 theologians for Indonesian Christians to read. http://dennytan.blogspot.com/2007/12/pendahuluan.html Round 4: Verboseness Owens ca...

Skins Game

Dallas is coming off a nice with over the Giants and are playing the Skins at 4 today. Based on where I live, this one's important to me. At church today I dressed my 16 month old son in a cowboys shirt. We both got some comments getting out of the nursery ... My wife didn't like it much, but you need to teach your children right when they are young. The Redskins have a good defense, especially their secondary. The boys need to get things going on the ground and to get TO involved early. We also need to get to Campbell, as I don't think he does well under pressure. We also need to shut down Portis and Betts .

Giants Game coming up

We play the Giants tomorrow and then the Skins next week. From a division standings perspective, these two games will decide who will have the upper ground going down the stretch. On paper the cowboys have the upper hand on the Giants. They are 7 & 1, the Giants are 6 & 2. The cowboys only loss has come by the Patriots, the best team in the NFL right now. The Cowboys beat the Giants in the opening game. But the Giants have been on a real role, winning their last 6 games. They are playing in NY and the Giants were missing key players last go around. Patriots aside, NY will probably be the best team the Cowboys have faced to date. Philly and Chicago were good last year, but they have struggled this year, so really their opening day win against NY was there best win so far. The Giants have a lot of weapons, Shockey up the middle, Burress on the deep ball a solid committee of running backs and to top it off Manning is finally playing like he isn’t just Patton’s spoiled little broth...

Nice to get a win in Philly

After what the Eagles did to us last year, it's quite satisfying to come to their home town and blow them out. The Cowboys played great. Romo looked good and Owens was on fire. MB III and Julius both looked good. Our offense is really tough to keep up with. The Eagles came out firing and looked like they would put up a good fight, but they couldn't keep it going. This was the first of a three game divisional stretch . Next is the Giants and then the Skins. Both of those games have bigger playoff implications than this one, but for me beating the Eagles is about as good as it gets.

Upcoming Eagles Game

We have the Eagles coming up this week on Sunday night in Philadelphia. They scare me. Not because of their brilliant record, the Eagles are having a tough year so far. Its just that I know that it will be sheer hate driving them on. They will be fired up for the game and come at us with everything they have. The keys to the game will be scoring points on that tough defense. We need to get Owens and Whitten involved early and get ahead. I don’t think the Eagles could keep up with us in a blow for blow contest. They will try to shut us down early and force a defensive/field position battle. On defense, I think stopping Westbrook has to be priority 1. That means all facets of his game, he can hurt you as a receiver just as much as a runner. William and Hamlin need to step up big time. We also need to get to McNabb like the Giants did. I really would love to see us beat the Eagles in Philadelphia. Don’t let the records fool you, this is going to be a battle.

Romo gets $67.5M over 6 years

more power to him... He's earned it by putting up great numbers, bouncing back from a whoopsie , leading the cowboys into one of their best starts I can remember and being the face of the franchise. I think the future looks good. Hope there is enough money left to sign Newman, Barber (restricted free agent), Adams, Jones and Crayton.

Tank Johnson

Recently the Cowboys signed one Terry "Tank" Johnson to play nose tackle. This was quite a controversial move because Tank was suspended for a history of issues including gun charges and an alleged DWI. Tank was a free agent because the Bears cut him after he messed up his last chance with them. Why did the Cowboys do it? In part because they lost Jason Ferrason their starting nose tackle in the first game of the season for the season. Not that Jason's backup Jay Ratliff is doing a bad job. I like Ratliff quite a bit. He's quick and can generate a good inside pass rush. I think of Ratliff as more than his previous role of nickel pass rusher. But Ratliff is small by NFL nose tackle standards. But I don't think that's the main reason. I think Jerry Jones wanted to pass up on a bargain. Tank is a good player and he was dirt cheap (basically free). The cowboys cut Nate Jones to make room on their roster for Tank. They signed Tank for $800K but he only gets a prora...

Vikings Recap

Recapping the last game against the Vikings.... We had a nice win over the Vikings 24-14. Romo was doing quite well the first half, but did next to nothing in the second half. He hurt his hamstring and I really wonder if he could throw the ball more than 20 years. The cowboys had to rely on the run in the second half. Marion Barber did a great job, rushing for a touchdown and also stringing together a series of important first downs late in the game. Two big plays canceled each other, the Vikings running back a fumble and the Cowboys running back a blocked kick. The Cowboys defense played good but not great. Roy Williams finally made a play!!! The pass rush looked great and Hatcher forced Adrian Peterson to fumble. Nice to see Hatcher develop. Gregg Ellis did well in his first start, getting 2 sacks. He's got 4 on the year, but looks to pressure Ware who has 6 but with 5 more games than Ellis. With Ware, Ellis, and Spencer we should get the QB all day. The game ball goes to the Vik...

State of the Union

The Cowboys are 6-1 going into the buy week. It's good their getting a chance to rest. The main thing right now is for Tony Romo to recover from his hamstring injury as he got hurt during the last game. The big picture is: 1) The Cowboys have a solid QB in Romo. Granted every once in a while he has a bad day, but he's the type of QB who can win a superbowl. 2) The 2 RB system is more or less effective. Marion Barber is perhaps a bit better than Jones, but the combo is really tough to deal with. 3) The defense is getting healthy and better. They are starting to put on a good pass rush which is key. 4) We have the best record in the NFC and only lost to the Patriots who are a machine. That said, we haven't beaten any really good teams so far, but we have won the games we were supposed to. 5) I think we have a legit shot at going to the superbowl this year.
